Argentina Wins Record 16th Copa America Title
Miami, Florida - July 15, 2024
Argentina snatched a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Colombia in a thrilling Copa America final on Sunday, securing their 16th title in the tournament's history.
The match, played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, saw Argentina dominate possession and create several chances throughout the game. However, it was Colombia who had the first clear opportunity, as Luis Diaz forced a diving save from Emiliano Martinez in the 15th minute.
Argentina eventually broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. Lionel Messi, who had been quiet for much of the game, received a pass just outside the penalty area and unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner, giving Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina no chance.
Colombia pushed for an equalizer in the remaining minutes, but Argentina's defense held firm to secure the victory. The win marks Argentina's first Copa America title since 2021 and extends their record as the most successful nation in the tournament's history with 16 titles.
