Dominion Energy Installs 50th Monopile Foundation for Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project

Dominion Energy continues to make progress on its Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, with the installation of the 50th monopile foundation.

The project remains on track to install between 70-100 monopile foundations by the end of October.

The monopile foundations are being staged at Portsmouth Marine Terminal and are manufactured by global steel fabrication company EEW.

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is a 26-gigawatt project that will be located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach.

The project is expected to be completed in 2026 and will provide enough energy to power 650,000 homes.

Here are some additional details about the project:

  • The monopile foundations are each 350 feet long and weigh 1,300 tons.
  • The foundations are driven into the seabed using a hydraulic hammer.
  • The turbines will be installed on top of the monopile foundations.
  • The project will create 1,100 jobs during construction and 1,300 jobs during operation.

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is a major investment in clean energy and will help to reduce Virginia's carbon footprint.
