Mata has signed a one-and-a-half-year deal with Galatasaray

Former Chelsea and Manchester United star Juan Mata has joined Turkish giants Galatasaray on a free transfer after leaving Vissel Kobe.

The 34-year-old midfielder has signed a one-and-a-half-year deal with the Istanbul club, who are currently top of the Turkish Super Lig.

Mata left Manchester United at the end of last season after eight years at Old Trafford. He joined Vissel Kobe in July but has now returned to Europe with Galatasaray.

Mata is a highly experienced and decorated player, having won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and Champions League during his time at Chelsea and Manchester United.

He will be hoping to add to his trophy haul with Galatasaray, who are aiming to win their 23rd Turkish Super Lig title.

Mata's move to Turkey is a surprise, but it is a sign of the growing strength of the Turkish Super Lig.

In recent years, a number of top players have joined Turkish clubs, including Mesut Ozil, Radamel Falcao and Mario Balotelli.

The arrival of Mata is another boost for the Turkish Super Lig and it will be interesting to see how he performs for Galatasaray.
